Kedah Bersatu man Robert Ling Kui Ee today hit out at Ismail Sabri Yaakob over what he described as the "game of cat and mouse" the prime minister had played over the dissolution of Parliament when meeting with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday.
Ling, a state exco member, said Ismail should make up his mind about the issue.
Instead, he said, the prime minister had "played a fudging game of cat and mouse", distracting everyone from "the real business of government" to ensure economic stability and prepare for the end-year monsoon season in addition to the tabling Budget 2023 today.
"The prime minister should make up his mind and either dissolve Parliament or not," he said in a statement.
"If he wants to dissolve Parliament, then do it. Keeping everyone on tenterhooks is not governing. It is irresponsible and callous, and corrosive to our economy, our political stability and our nation's democracy.
"Ismail is the prime minister. He must start behaving like one and lead the nation, and stop playing cat and mouse."
Ismail, who has been under pressure from Umno leaders aligned with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to dissolve Parliament and make way for the 15th general election, yesterday said that he might broach the topic during his audience with the Agong, fuelling further speculation about the prospect of early polls.
"Still unsure whether it will be brought up," he said. "If it takes too long to discuss Cabinet issues, it will be about Cabinet only."
He later had a 45-minute audience with Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, following which the palace issued a statement saying that it had been a routine weekly discussion to discuss government matters.
