PAS logo fuss shows members don’t trust Bersatu, says analyst

Voters in Terengganu, Kedah and Kelantan would be more familiar with the PAS logo, an analyst said.

PETALING JAYA: A demand by PAS grassroot members for the party to use its familiar moon logo at the coming general election reflects doubts about its ally Bersatu’s ability to attract voters, says a political analyst.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said familiarity with a logo was no help to PKR when it contested the Melaka state elections last November using its own logo instead of the Pakatan Harapan symbol.

PKR did not win any of the 11 constituencies it contested.

Azmi said the demand by PAS members was more about their lack of confidence in Bersatu as an ally. “They don’t think Bersatu would be of any help,” he told FMT.

PAS is a member of the Bersatu-led Perikatan Nasional coalition.

He said PN should allow PAS to use its own logo only in Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah, the three states controlled by the party as it was likely that voters there would be more familiar with the moon symbol.

At the party’s muktamar (general assembly) last weekend, delegates from Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Selangor demanded that PAS candidates in these four states use the PAS logo for the general election.

Even the party’s election director, Sanusi Md Nor, claimed many voters and party supporters were “allergic” to Perikatan Nasional’s blue, as it was seen as too similar to that of Barisan Nasional.

A delegate from Selangor, Malik Marzuki, told FMT he hoped the party would not make any decision on the logo just to pacify its allies in PN.

“The party has a very strong grassroots that can do the groundwork compared to other parties. So it shouldn’t be the one doing all the work under a different logo, which will only benefit our allies.”
