GEORGE TOWN, Nov 3 ― The Sisters of the Infant Jesus (IJ Sisters) said today there is no concern of redevelopment on land it owns in Penang, on which several missionary girls’ schools are located ― one of them the country’s oldest.
IJ Sisters' Sr Celina Wong said the Roman Catholic religious institute does not intend to sell the land and buildings for redevelopment.
“We hold a very long history here in Malaysia and preserving our history ― be it the thrust of educating young people and/or the conservation of the heritage buildings ― is dear to us. The IJ Sisters will never forget our mission in education.
The IJ Sisters indicated their plans to continue educating girls there.
But the Penang Education Department told a different story, saying it has stopped intake of girls for the school year starting 2018. It alluded to the land owners, namely the IJ Sisters, are taking back the land on which the schools are located, implying the owners have plans to terminate Light Street Convent from functioning as a school.

Though kaytee was from MBS and my 'sister' school has been the MGS, I have a personal fondness for Convent Light Street ... (and wakakaka) ... its beautiful girls.
My first teen sweetheart was from there while my second (also while we were teens) was from Convent Green Lane. Thus as can be seen, I have a weakness for Convent girls, wakakaka.
Most of my cousin sisters were educated there. They would be most devastated to hear of this silliness.
Surely Convent Light Street as the oldest girls' school in Malaya must be a protected heritage site?
good idea. shd no more condo at hill site, pg govt can now try heritage site.
ReplyDeleteKaytee,I think that Lim Guan Eng should have Convent Light Street under the protection of old heritage buildings to stop greedy developers and their political friends taking advantage of the sisters,whom many if not most are not well versed in state building laws or business and may be conned to sign off the deeds for pennies to the dollar.
