Suggestions for underground systems to tackle floods unrealistic, said netizens

This monsoon season has brought out the worst of floods in the northern Malaysian states. Netizens are expressing their sympathies towards the victims of the flood.

It has consistently been happening almost every year, and to some this may seem like a hopeless cause.

According to reports, several individuals have taken to TikTok to seek help for families stranded by floods in Kelantan.

A woman couldn’t contact her mother and requested assistance. Another user posted about her parents trapped in Kampung Bakong. Fortunately, they were rescued after a day.

Concerns over strong currents and rationing of food continue as flood victims seek safety.

Despite having three skyscrapers listed among the top 25 tallest buildings in the world, some netizens are still in shock that our country still faces annual flooding in several states, with no lasting solutions in place.

Additionally, a user on X proposed that the government consider constructing large underground tanks similar to those in Japan.

However, such a project would be highly expensive, and even major Malaysian cities like Kuala Lumpur currently lack infrastructure on this scale.

Social media users appear skeptical about the idea of constructing underground basins.

Many believe that Japanese cities differ significantly from a state like Kelantan, and such an ambitious project may be overwhelming even for a city like Kuala Lumpur.

However, some argue that proposing ideas, even imperfect ones, is better than offering no solutions to address floods.

Nonetheless, finding an effective resolution is far more challenging than it may seem. —Dec 1, 2024
