KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain has ordered a thorough investigation into the hit-and-run incident in Ipoh that saw a police officer ram into a student on a motorcycle, killing him.

The order was issued to the Ipoh and Perak police chiefs and the director of Bukit Aman’s traffic investigation and enforcement department

Razarudin gave his assurance that the investigation would be fair and transparent, despite the accident having involved a senior police officer at the Kedah police headquarters.

“Police have taken statements from seven witnesses who were at the scene of the incident.

“The police officer has been arrested and will be brought to court to obtain a remand order today,” Berita Harian reported him as saying.

Razarudin said the investigation is being carried out under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

“I call on anyone who witnessed the incident and has information to help the police in their investigation,” he said.

It was reported earlier that Zaharif Affendi Zamrie was knocked off his motorcycle while on his way home from his school, SMK Jati, at 12.30pm yesterday.

According to Sinar Harian, the driver was said to have been annoyed with the loud noises from the motorcycle. The report said the car rammed into Zaharif’s motorcycle after a 1km chase, causing him to fall off and be dragged for nearly 5km.

Witnesses said the driver returned to the scene to examine the victim but fled after noticing a crowd, according to the report.

Zaharif, who was wearing his school uniform, is believed to have died at the scene.
