Unemployment numbers among Bumiputeras recorded a drop in 2023 when compared to the previous year, says human resources minister Steven Sim.

In a written parliamentary reply to Rushdan Rusmi (PAS-Padang Besar), he said unemployed Bumiputera numbers dropped from 391,900 in 2022 to 354,900 in 2023.

“The percentage of unemployed youths recorded a drop from 4.1% in 2022 to 3.6% in 2023,” he said, citing the statistics department’s Labour Force Survey report.

“The higher unemployment rate among youths is because they are in that transitional phase between their studies and employment.”

Sim said his ministry had prepared several programmes to encourage Bumiputera entry into the workforce, including the MYFutureJobs job-matching portal and the Wage Guide system to help graduates make career choices.
