Gaza resolution another failure by the UN Security Council: Scholar

Israel keeps up Gaza attacks as UN urges more aid

Ardi Imseis, assistant professor of international law at Queen’s University in Canada, said the UN Security Council had failed yet again in its role to ensure international order, and the US had provided “diplomatic cover” for Israel’s war on Gaza.

“Yet again, the Security Council has failed to shoulder its responsibility to maintain international peace and security and in this case, yet again, because of the actions of one permanent member – the United States,” Imseis told Al Jazeera from Ottawa, Canada.

“Ten days ago, the international community declared – in a resolution of the General Assembly – overwhelmingly called for an immediate ceasefire, and today, the United States and Israeli find themselves out on a limb against the whole of the international community and all of it at the expense of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip – defenceless, starved, chased out of their homes, subject to a scorched earth tactic,” Imseis said.

“It is astounding that this should be allowed to happen but make no mistake, it is very clear for all to see,” he said.

“The international community … has made it clear they are with the Palestinian victims. That they are with the people of Palestine in the Gaza Strip. Unfortunately, that powers that be in Washington and Tel Aviv are having it their way,” he added.
