EPF CEO Amir sworn in as senator ahead of cabinet reshuffle

Employees Provident Fund CEO Amir Hamzah Azizan has been sworn in as a member of the Dewan Negara this morning.

This comes as Amir was tipped for a role in the Finance Ministry as part of the cabinet reshuffle that will soon be announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Dewan Negara president Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaffar announced that Amir (above) and Zulkifli Hasan were the two senators who took the swearing-in oath today.

“On behalf of the Dewan Negara, I extend my heartiest congratulations to both members who were appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong with effect from Dec 12, 2023 to Dec 11, 2026,” he said.

He added that Article 43(2)(b) of the Federal Constitution states that the King shall on the advice of the prime minister appoint ministers from among the members of either House of Parliament.

“So that has been accomplished this morning and I suggest that any minister appointed from among these senators also plays a role to be the best champion to defend and uphold the institution of the Senate as the upper house, i.e. the highest legislative body in our country.

“I would also like to recall that Article 49(3) stating that the Council of Ministers should be jointly responsible to Parliament,” said Wan Junaidi.
