Lawyer and activist Siti Kasim has voiced strong support for DAP’s proposal to limit the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years, while sharply criticizing PAS for rejecting the idea on religious grounds. She called on DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke to follow through on the proposal, arguing that it would enhance leadership accountability and prevent long-term power abuse.

Her criticism was particularly aimed at PAS president Tan Sri Hadi Awang, who dismissed the proposal by claiming it was a tactic by DAP to undermine Islam and Malay political dominance. In his column, Hadi argued that Malaysia belongs to Malay Muslims and that limiting a prime minister’s tenure contradicts “God’s will.”

Siti Kasim took to Hadi’s reasoning, pointing out the historical inaccuracy of his claims. “If we go back far enough in history, archaeological evidence shows this land had Hindu influences long before Islam arrived,” she remarked in a video message. She questioned why PAS was linking race and religion to a governance issue, insisting that leadership should be determined by competence rather than identity.

She also criticized Hadi’s followers for blindly supporting him despite what she called his “shallow thinking.” “God doesn’t run this country—Malaysians do, and leaders are chosen by the rakyat,” she added, urging Hadi to stop portraying himself as a religious authority over governance.

Siti emphasized that fixed-term limits would bring stability, efficiency, and better governance by ensuring leaders focus on their work rather than holding onto power indefinitely. She argued that such a system would encourage succession planning, fresh leadership, and reduce issues like corruption, nepotism, and cronyism.

“Malaysia has suffered enough from leaders who refuse to step down, keeping their grip on power just to exploit public resources. DAP should push ahead with its proposal, ignoring the objections from PAS supporters,” she urged.

She also took aim at PAS lawmaker Syahir Sulaiman, who suggested that a two-term limit could be considered only if the prime minister must be Muslim. She accused him of prioritizing religious identity over leadership quality, warning that such thinking would only harm the country.
