Summary

  • Urimai chairperson P Ramasamy tells Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim that he achieved a “phyrric victory” today over the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple issue.

  • He adds that Indians, who placed great hope in Anwar, will never forget this day.

The United for the Rights of Malaysians Party (Urimai) chairperson P Ramasamy has dismissed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s claim that the controversial temple and mosque issue in Kuala Lumpur was resolved with wisdom, insisting that it was a “forced relocation”.

He argued that Anwar’s speech on March 25, where the prime minister stated the temple was built without permission, had set the tone for this outcome.

“The temple committee, made up of ordinary individuals, lacked the political strength to resist the government’s demands.

“The so-called ‘Madani Indian’ representatives showed a shameful lack of integrity in allowing the forced relocation of a 130-year-old temple—one that predates formal land ownership in the area,” he wrote in an open letter to Anwar.

Ramasamy explained that the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple was built when the land was unregistered - essentially existing on no man’s land.

It was only after the introduction of the Torrens land registration system that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) acquired the property, later selling portions of it, including to Jakel Trading Sdn Bhd.

“How could you, as prime minister, so casually dismiss the historical and cultural significance of this temple?

“How is it that a 130-year-old place of worship is suddenly deemed ‘illegal’ simply because DBKL approved a mosque on the same land?

“If DBKL had the authority to sell the land, why was the temple never granted legal ownership, despite previous applications?” he questioned.

Ramasamy also asked whether MIC representatives in the then-Federal Territories Ministry had ever advocated for a permanent land grant for the temple.

“It is disgraceful that these MIC leaders are now parroting your narrative, portraying the relocation as a fair resolution,” he added.

‘Marginalising religious minority’

Accusing Anwar of “marginalising a religious minority,” Ramasamy said the prime minister appeared more interested in proving his strength to the Muslim majority.

“The entire ‘negotiation’ process was nothing more than a facade. The presence of Indian representatives was merely an attempt to give the government’s actions a veneer of legitimacy.

“Some may see this as a political victory, an example of your leadership’s effectiveness. But let me be clear: this is a pyrrhic victory,” he stated.

Referencing Anwar’s officiation of the mosque’s groundbreaking ceremony this morning, Ramasamy said Indians who had placed “great hope” in him would never forget March 27, 2025.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim

In his speech at the ceremony, Anwar described the planned construction of the Madani Mosque at the heart of Masjid India as a “victory” after a decade of stalled development.

However, he emphasised that the success - credited to various federal ministers and others directly involved - was not achieved through arrogance.

“Our victory is not one borne out of arrogance. This victory is because we were able to demonstrate the wisdom, strength, and nobility of Islam - not arrogance,” Anwar explained.
