KUALA LUMPUR – As the dust settles on the long-running dispute over the Dewi Sri Pathra Kaliamman Temple’s relocation, questions remain over the land transaction that facilitated the construction of Masjid Madani.

Now, company documents reveal that Jakel Trading Sdn Bhd obtained a RM14.112 million loan in 2014 to purchase the contested land in Masjid India, where the 130-year-old temple is located.

According to Jakel Trading’s annual report for April to December 2014, sighted by Scoop, the company secured a loan from RHB Bank Bhd to acquire land at Lot 328, Lorong Bunus 6, Seksyen 40. The address reportedly corresponds with the location of the Hindu temple.

Additional details indicate that the loan had a 180-month repayment term beginning in July 2014, with monthly repayments of RM110,497 at an Islamic Base Rate of 2% per annum.

A separate filing with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) states that Jakel Trading obtained a RM14.112 million Commodity Murabaha Term Financing-i facility from RHB Islamic Bank Bhd, which was charged against the land.

Jakel Trading’s 2014 annual report also showed that the company’s property holdings increased from RM15.7 million in 2013 to RM42.1 million the following year.

Additionally, SSM documents described the property in question as “commercial vacant land.”

The land has been at the centre of a prolonged dispute due to the presence of the temple, which had to be relocated to make way for the construction of Masjid Madani.

On March 25, the temple committee agreed to relocate to a new site 50 metres away, with a land area equivalent to the current 4,000 sqft.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, said that this agreement was reached following discussions involving various stakeholders, including the temple authorities.

She also assured that no demolition would take place at the existing temple structure, allowing it to continue operations until the relocation process is fully completed in a harmonious manner.

Temple secretary Kartik Gunaseelan expressed gratitude for the resolution, noting that the new site, located within the Jalan Masjid India area, was a suitable alternative.

On March 27, Jakel Group Managing Director Datuk Seri Mohamed Faroz Mohamed Jakel said the company had been waiting 11 years to begin construction of the mosque.

He revealed that negotiations to acquire the land from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) began as early as 2009, with a 10% deposit paid in August 2012, followed by the signing of the sale and purchase agreement in 2014.

During a press conference on March 20, lawyers N. Surendran and Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, representing the temple committee, said the temple was not informed about DBKL’s sale of the land to Jakel Trading.

However, before the relocation agreement was reached, they expressed hope that the temple could remain at the site. The two lawyers also urged the government to release the sales and purchase agreement on the plot of land.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Masjid Madani on March 27, said that the resolution of the issue was not about victory or arrogance but about wisdom, strength, and the honour of Islam. He emphasised that the peaceful negotiations leading to the temple’s relocation were not a sign of weakness but a demonstration of respect and understanding.

He further highlighted that the government had consistently advocated for dialogue and compromise, ensuring that both the mosque and temple could coexist harmoniously. – March 30, 2025
