KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed deep concern over the devastating earthquake that struck central Myanmar and northern Thailand, causing significant loss of life and widespread destruction.
In a Facebook post, Anwar described reports of collapsed buildings, trapped civilians, and rising casualties as deeply distressing.
“We are also closely monitoring developments in China’s southern Yunnan, where tremors have been felt and structural damage reported,” he said.
“On behalf of Malaysia, I extend our deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones, and our prayers go to those injured and displaced,” he added.
Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s solidarity with its ASEAN neighbours, acknowledging the emergency measures taken by Myanmar and Thailand in response to the disaster.
“Malaysia is ready to extend assistance and support humanitarian efforts as needed. In this time of shared grief and resilience, may recovery be swift, and may the strength of our regional bonds bring hope and healing,” he said.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock minutes later. Tremors were felt as far as Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh City.
In Myanmar, local media reported that authorities have declared a state of emergency in Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Bago, Eastern Shan State, and the capital, Naypyidaw, as officials assess the damage.
In Thailand, key transit systems—including Bangkok’s MRT, BTS, and Airport Rail Link—have been suspended following the tremors. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared Bangkok a disaster-stricken area as assessments continue.
Malaysia, through its embassies in Yangon and Bangkok, is closely monitoring the aftermath of the earthquake. The Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) confirmed that preliminary checks indicate no Malaysians have been injured.
“Malaysians residing in or travelling through Myanmar and Thailand are advised to remain vigilant, stay informed through local authorities, and take all necessary safety precautions,” the ministry stated.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok, located at the Kronos Office Tower, has been temporarily sealed for a safety assessment.
“Until further notice, Malaysians are advised to avoid approaching the existing embassy premises.
“In the event of an emergency or severe aftershock, Malaysians in Bangkok are advised to gather at the Embassy Complex next to Sathorn Garden, rather than the Kronos Sathorn Tower location,” the ministry added. – March 28, 2025
