Bicycle falls on the head of a lady from the 12th floor: B40 problems?
By CS Ming

THERE is this charming Malay proverb, “Durian runtuh,” which means getting something easily and unexpectedly.
But the proverb, however, did not account for the fact that durian, being a heavy fruit studded with thorns, might not be the best thing to “runtuh” on a person.
Recently, a poor lady might have experienced the meaning of this proverb when a bicycle landed on her head, being thrown from the 12th floor.
According to news portal Berita Harian, it happened at the Padang Hiliran People’s Housing Program (PPR).
Netizens have since then pointed out the many interesting or on a less elegant note, dangerous things that happen in low cost housing developments.
Prompted by the tragedy, @AmHafies said he recalled a case where people threw a chair from the top floor, hitting a teenager who died.

@faithhnni claimed a pebble from such a height could crack a person’s skull. “A fine of one million or the death penalty for such an offender please,” he said.
Then there was @mieyra_azmi_ claiming she had done a research in a low cost housing development near Kedah.
“There are all sorts of cases that we now of. There are cases of selling body, murder and drugs. It is sad that the place was new but the mentality of the people staying there was terrible,” she said.

Away from the horror, the picture comment is a breath of fresh air:

An opportunistic netizen further pointed out that money could be made from these places. According to him, people could charge the residents there some money to collect their garbage.
Also, @Deegee4646 said the act of throwing a huge object could be grounds for murder.
He added that despite the uncivilised behaviour of these people, there are people in low cost flats who defied the stereotype, living a harmonious life.

Back to the victim, she received five stitches on her head. The incident occurred when Azuraini Yazid, 43, who is also a TABIKA Kemas assistant in Pasir Panjang, was on her way to dispose of rubbish, at about 4pm.
Her husband said he had met the owner of the bicycle involved, but the party claimed that his child’s bicycle, which was outside the house, was thrown by another individual. —Mar 27, 2025

Anyone who passes on the ground floor outside one of these buildings is always taking a risk of objects falling on them -purely being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
