YANGON (Bernama-Xinhua): A total of 1,644 people died, 3,408 were injured, and 139 remained missing in a powerful earthquake in Myanmar, Xinhua reported, quoting the Information Team of the State Administration Council on Saturday night.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the southeast Asian country on Friday, with Mandalay, Bago, Magway, the northeastern Shan state, Sagaing, and Nay Pyi Taw among the hardest-hit regions.
Myanmar's State Administration Council Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Mandalay by helicopter on Saturday morning to inspect the severely affected area, according to Myanmar Radio and Television.

I saw news in Australia showing Wankee helicopters (from its carrier off Sumatran coast) just flying around on photo ops (for the folks back home) whilst a frantic sole Indon survivor on the devastated ground was waving his arms desperately for help. The chopper just flew around the poor Sumatran but frigg off after some (presumably) nice photo shots - t'was obvious to Aussie viewers it did frigg-all to help that survivor - all kerbau swanning by hypo wanks just to con their gullible folks at home

In any situation where the need for assistance is grave and likely exceeds available resources, you don't just jump in half-arsed.
You survey where and how much assistance is needed, then the team assesses to come up with a game plan how and where best to deploy resources.
Obviously, time is of the essence.

BTW, the USS Abraham Lincoln's nuclear reactors were producing the equivalent of 3 swimming pools of additional fresh water per day. In the early days after the tsunami, all power cut, pipes broken, no water supply,.many thousands of Indonesian survivors were kept alive by that alone.
Most of the road system in Aceh that skirted the seaside were destroyed. Other aid agencies that arrived were unable to reach far flung villages , but the American heavy lift helicopters delivered many supplies that nobody else were able to do.
Singapore AF later arrived with landing craft that could deliver aid from the sea...thank goodness for the Sings.

The event occurred in an area called the Triple Junction, where the Pacific, Juan de Fruca, and North American tectonic plates meet.
