KUALA LUMPUR – Authorities are investigating a video posted online by a former Member of Parliament, suspected of making defamatory remarks about Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in connection with a corruption case involving Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the probe began after a report was lodged by a representative of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at around 12.06 pm yesterday.

“We will seek assistance from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to identify the account owner.

“The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he told Bernama today.

The video, which has since circulated widely, features the former MP allegedly making defamatory claims against Anwar and Saifuddin Nasution in relation to the corruption investigation involving the Bera MP, who is also the former prime minister.

Yesterday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has completed questioning the doctor treating Ismail at a hospital in Selangor.

However, an MACC source clarified that the doctor is not considered a witness in the ongoing investigation into alleged corruption and money laundering linked to the former prime minister.

So far, 32 witnesses have provided statements, including four of Ismail’s former senior officers who were previously remanded and later released on MACC bail.

The media earlier reported that Ismail’s statement, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was postponed to today and later rescheduled to March 13 due to health concerns.

The former UMNO vice-president was admitted to a private medical centre after collapsing at his home on February 21.

On March 3, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that Ismail is a suspect in the corruption and money laundering probe following the discovery of approximately RM170 million in cash at a safe house during a raid.

Amid the probe, Anwar has urged all parties to refrain from making premature assumptions regarding the investigation involving Ismail.

He stressed that the matter should be left to the authorities to carry out a thorough and fair probe.

“The principle is to investigate without bias… I do not obstruct any action, but at the same time, no one should be judged before a transparent and just process is completed,” he told reporters after attending a breaking fast event at Parliament today.

Previously, Azam was quoted as saying that Ismail was identified as a suspect after MACC officers seized approximately RM170 million in cash during a raid on a safe house.

To date, MACC has recorded statements from 31 individuals and frozen 13 bank accounts valued at around RM2 million, all of which remain active.

Investigators have also seized approximately RM170 million in various foreign currencies, including Baht, Riyal, Pound Sterling, Won, Euro, Swiss Franc, and Yuan. Additionally, 16 kilogrammes of pure gold bullion, estimated to be worth nearly RM7 million, were seized. – March 8, 2025
