PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin has defended his administration, insisting that it didn’t fail although he lost his majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.

Speaking at Bersatu’s fifth anniversary event, he said that while his government was busy managing Covid-19 and taking care of the people, there were those who “wanted to see us fail” and “conspired to bring down the government”.

“There were many people who didn’t like their actions, including Bersatu members who wanted me to continue to lead the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

“But I had to abide by the Federal Constitution. When I lost majority support in the Dewan Rakyat, I had to resign and that is what I did.”

Muhyiddin said while he could have taken a back seat and kept quiet following his resignation, he still had to fulfil his responsibilities as Bersatu president and PN chairman.

If he had remained passive, he said, the political situation would have remained volatile as nobody would have been able to command a majority.

It also could have led to the formation of a Pakatan Harapan government “with the support of kleptocrats” that would have made Bersatu part of the opposition.

On preparations for the next general election, where he hoped PN could make a “comeback”, he advised Bersatu members to focus on strengthening the party’s grassroots support and avoid infighting caused by “feelings of envy and jealousy”.

He said the people also needed to see Bersatu as a party devoted to service, not one that pushed a racial agenda, or was greedy or power hungry.

“We must also continue our charity work. The people want to feel our service to them, what help we can deliver.

“Bersatu leadership at every level must act as role models for the community, especially the young people who will be the successors of the party and national leadership.”

To this end, he also announced the Bersatu Leadership Academy, which would hold training courses to develop young leaders in accordance with the party’s values and ideals.
