PETALING JAYA: Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi has been called up by the cops for taking part in an assembly at Dataran Merdeka on Aug 2. The thing is: she was never at the gathering.
She has been told to be at the Dang Wangi station on Sept 8 to have her statement taken and be issued a compound for taking part in the gathering.
Wong, however, said she was inside the Parliament building, attending a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on that particular day.
She said she was stopped by police officers at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim and was asked to take a different route to enter Parliament when she showed the PAC’s official letter.

Wong Shu Qi.
Wong said the police were only then given a list of PAC members who had to be present that day and they let her pass through the Sultan Iskandar Highway roadblock at 9.55 am.
“It was very disappointing when I was still given a notice by the police who claimed certain parties had given statements that I was involved in a gathering at Dataran Merdeka,” she said, adding that such statements were false.
On Aug 2, opposition MPs had gathered at Dataran Merdeka before attempting to march to Parliament to push for the continuation of a special sitting which was postponed on the advice of the health ministry following an outbreak of Covid-19.
The investigation papers on the group of opposition MPs who gathered at Dataran Merdeka have been referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
The MPs, who were led by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, subsequently dispersed peacefully on the advice of the police.
