Australia seeks UN help for hostage release

In line with big brother, the USA, Australia used to be dismissive of the UN as irrelevant, but since then has gone back to the international organisation for help in securing the release of an Australian, Douglas Wood, held hostage in Iraq by insurgents.

UN irrelevant? It may not be perfect, and that's mainly because of its veto-wielding permanent members of the Security Council like the USA, Russia (then USSR) and the others, but time and time and time again the UN has shown it weight in gold.
