Malaysia is perhaps the only country on the planet that will always see cases of Malay-Muslims bullying non-Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan. To be fair, it only happens in Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia) while the people of Sabah and Sarawak (East Malaysia) continue to foster true racial and religious harmony, thanks to the South China Sea which separated both.



The latest incident of such bullying involved an ethnic Chinese man who was slapped by a Malay in a mall in Johor Bahru. Caught in a video clip, apparently the middle-aged Malay-Muslim confronted the Chinese, whom he suspected was a Malay-Muslim eating during Ramadan. The Malay demanded the 21-year-old Chinese to produce his identification card to prove his race and religion.



Refused to be intimidated, the victim declined to do so, leading to an argument before he was slapped twice by the despicable Malay dressed in religious garb. The Chinese man was absolutely right to reject the demand to produce his identification card as only authorities such as police officers have the authority to request identification. Even if the Chinese youth was a Muslim, the Malay has no right to act violently and illegally.


The incident, which happened on March 16 around 3:45pm at Family Mart in Angsana Mall, Johor Bahru, has been reported to the police. The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing injury, and if found guilty, the offender can be sentenced to imprisonment for up to one year or fined up to RM2,000 or both. However, don’t bet your money that the Malay man will get the punishment he deserves.



This is yet another classic example where “Ketuanan Melayu”, the ideology of Malay supremacy espoused by the corrupt and racist UMNO, has produced generations of radicals and extremists groomed to threaten, belittle, insult, bully, oppress and attack non-Malays. In most cases, such bullies would be given a slap on the wrist by the authorities as long as they are Malay-Muslims.



Even though the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) was defeated in the May 2018 General Election, the Malay nationalist party is back to business as it is now part of a multi-coalition ruling government called the Unity Government led by Anwar Ibrahim, the 10th Prime Minister who has been keeping silent whenever non-Malays are targeted by Malays.


Like it or not, racism and extremism are getting worse, largely because PM Anwar was terrified of offending the Malay-Muslims whenever there is a conflict between the majority and minority ethnic. Desperate to appease the Malay voters, about 80% of whom did not vote for him, Anwar’s recipe is to pretend that nothing had happened – until it’s too late.



Mr Anwar might think it was a brilliant tactic not to respond to any racist or extremist provocations. But it has only emboldened an increasing group of ultra-Malays brainwashed into thinking that Malaysia belongs to the Malays only so they can do whatever hell they like, including slapping the Chinese for not respecting the fasting month by eating.



Interestingly, Johor Bahru Utara district police chief ACP Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh urged members of the public who have information related to the incident to come forward and assist the investigation. Clearly, this is a hint that this case could be swept under the carpet again. With the video clips going viral and a police report lodged by the victim, what other information Mr Balveer Singh still needs before he has the balls to charge the culprit?


It is also a slap in the face of the Sultanate of Johor as the violence occurred in the state which the monarch brags about the superiority of “Bangsa Johor” concept, which supposedly promotes the unity of Johoreans of all races and religions. Sultan Ibrahim of Johor has also previously stressed the importance of racial harmony and mutual respect for the prosperous and united Johor.



“I don’t want my Bangsa Johor to be confused and begin turning on each other. I cannot emphasize enough the need for racial understanding, unity and tolerance” – said Sultan Ibrahim in 2023. As early as 2015, the Johor Sultan warned that Johoreans who practise hatred and racism must leave the state. But it appears there are truckloads of Bangsa Johor who didn’t get the memo.



To make matters worse, the Crown Prince of Johor – Tunku Ismail Idris – was plunged into an episode of bullying when his royal police bodyguard was caught punching a deaf Grab driver, Ong Ing Keong last year. The best part is after more than five months since the Chinese victim was assaulted, Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad only dared to slap the despicable royal police escort with a fine of RM1,000.


But this is not the first time non-Malays have been victimised by Malays during Ramadan. In 2013 during the Najib Razak administration, a primary school – SK Seri Pristana – in Sungai Buloh, Selangor, near Petaling Jaya, attracted world attention when the school ordered Indian students to eat in a toilet instead of canteendue to the fasting month Ramadan.

After the despicable and inhumane incident exploded in alternative news media, then-Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin ordered an investigation into the matter, claiming he would take action. Of course, nothing had happened because “Ketuanan Melayu” always wins and non-Malays always get bullied, discriminated and oppressed.

The confrontation and provocation by the Malay in Johor has tarnished Islam as the religion does not teach Muslims to control others about their own hunger. Besides, what the heck was he doing in a food establishment during fasting hours? It also sparked the question about religious policing by civilians, which could be inspired by the notorious Islamic Development Department Malaysia (Jakim).


Flushed with more than RM2 billion, thanks to Anwar’s generous allocation to boost his Islam credentials, the arrogant and extremist Jakim has been trying to force unreasonable and ridiculous rules on non-Muslims, including mandating halal certification on all food operators as well as new rules for Muslims attending non-Muslims celebrations or festivals.
