Topics related to the bilateral relationship between Malaysia and the US were discussed with the US ambassador

MALAYSIA has extended an invitation to United States President Donald Trump to participate in the East Asia Summit, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today.


The Prime Minister shared that this invitation was communicated to US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan during a courtesy visit this evening.

“During the meeting, we discussed the bilateral relationship between Malaysia and the US which had been established long ago. We also focussed on economic and technological cooperation, which are of mutual interest, as well as halal certification,” Anwar said in a Facebook update.

Another topic discussed was the Asean 2025 chairmanship, with a particular focus on the Asean-US Special Summit.



The conversation also included topics related to the bilateral relationship between Malaysia and the US.

For the record, Malaysia is currently holding the ASEAN Chairmanship this year.

During Trump's first term in 2017, he participated in the Asean Summit hosted by the Philippines, but he did not attend the following Asean summits.

The previous 12th Asean-US Summit and the East Asia Summit in October 2024 in Vientiane, Laos, were attended by then-US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

In 2023, both the East Asia Summit and the 11th Asean-US Summit saw participation from then-US Vice President Kamala Harris. Last month, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan indicated that Malaysia is actively working towards organising a Special Asean-US Summit. – March 11, 2025
