Plot twist: ERA FM’s deejay trio hailed as heroes; made black sheep to portray Malays as racist, extremist?
LIKE the recent whirlwind which swept through Sekinchan recently, it is remarkable how at a blink of an eye, the three ERA FM presenters in the centre of the much-publicised Thaipusam gaffe are suddenly treated as victims of evil narrative to insult the sanctity of Islam.
More interestingly, lawyer Mahmud Jumaat has openly defended the trio by claiming that the purported kavadi dance performed by Azad Jasmin a.k.a. Pak Azad (first of the three ERA FM deejays) was merely to mimic the ring entrance move of Malaysian muay Thai exponent Miki Ghazali.
Moreover, it was further contended that the “Vel, Vel” chant blurted out by Nabil Ahmad (second of the three ERA FM presenters) while Pak Azad was imitating the so-called Paqueta dance parody was actually “Vai Vai” which in Portuguese simply means “go, go”.
Such distinct features were shared by publisher/author Hilal Asyraf (@HilalAsyraf) who claimed to have ‘unearth’ new evidence in the controversy.

“It now seems that the trio are being slandered and defamed upon,” penned Hilal in a post that has garnered 1.3M views and 4.9K likes at the time of writing.
“Who among those who claim to be pro-justice, pro-racial harmony who will stand up and uphold justice for the trio while hunt down those who are trying to make the three of them scapegoats, inciting conflict between races & religions?”
Hilal further fortified his argument with the so-called legal insights by Mahmud who is a partner at law firm Emir Mahmud & Co (EMCO).
“In any case, it would be better for them to explain the real situation of what happened before they continue to apologise. For me, their apology was made in a hurry and in an excessive manner till they had to go all the way to Batu Caves to apologise,” opined Mahmud.

Whether this is an afterthought or legal spin, not everyone agreed with both Halil and Mahmud given that there must be some feeling of guilt or remorse that prompted the deejay trio to drag themselves to seek forgiveness in Batu Caves. – March 9, 2025
