  • Leong will be joined by over a hundred non-Malays at a buka puasa event in Janda Baik, Bentong.

  • MCA has stated that any member who joins another party will be expelled immediately.

Ex-MCA president Liow Tiong Lai’s former political secretary Leong Kim Soon is set to lead over a hundred non-Malays in joining the Bersatu associate members wing.

Selangor Bersatu associate members wing chairperson Goh Gaik Meng confirmed to Malaysiakini yesterday that Leong (above) will officially join the party during a buka puasa event in Janda Baik, Bentong, at around 6pm today.

Two weeks ago, Goh told the Chinese-language media that several prominent figures would soon switch allegiance to Bersatu.

Speaking to Malaysiakini last night, he revealed that Leong is one of them, adding that more heavyweights would soon follow suit.

Leong has also confirmed with several Chinese-language media that he will join the Bersatu associate members wing.

According to Sin Chew Daily, Leong said opposition leader and Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin will also attend the Janda Baik event.

Immediate expulsion

Besides being Liow’s political secretary during his tenure as MCA president and a cabinet minister, Leong held several party positions, including MCA Youth secretary-general, Pahang MCA Youth chief, and MCA spokesperson.

In the 2013 general election, Leong contested the Bilut state seat in Pahang but lost to DAP candidate Chow Yu Hui.

MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon

MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon told Sin Chew Daily last night that any MCA member who joins another party would be immediately expelled, even without submitting a resignation letter.

He also expressed shock and disappointment over the expected defection of his former MCA Youth comrade.

In recent months, several MCA members defected to Bersatu, including local councillor Lim Yew Chin.

Goh was also an MCA member and ran for MCA Youth chief in the 2021 party polls but was defeated by Chong.
