Summary

  • The MCMC is investigating a religiously offensive Facebook post re-uploaded by controversial preacher Zamri Vinoth after it was taken down by the social media platform.

  • Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil says MCMC will take action according to the result of the investigation.

The MCMC is investigating a Facebook post that was reuploaded by Islamic preacher Zamri Vinoth after it was taken down by the social media company yesterday.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he has ordered the agency to look into the issue and will act based on MCMC findings.

"I have asked MCMC to look into this issue. MCMC has yet to inform what action they have taken so far following the individual's action, where he reuploaded content that has been taken down.

"The (social media) platform would only take down content if they agree that it violates the law or their community guidelines. So, his (Zamri) posting was seen by Facebook as having violated the law.

"We will take a follow-up action based on MCMC investigation findings," he told reporters after a breaking-of-fast event in Kuala Lumpur this evening.

It was reported that Zamri’s Facebook post that compared kavadi bearers during Thaipusam to individuals who are possessed or intoxicated has been removed from the social media platform on Sunday.

However, the preacher reportedly re-uploaded the post on his Facebook account soon after it was taken down, prompting DAP lawmaker RSN Rayer to urge authorities to arrest Zamri.
