In the TikTok clip produced by Era FM, its DJs appear to be mocking the kavadi dance while chanting ‘Vel Vel’ and laughing.

PETALING JAYA
DJs from Era FM’s 3 Pagi Era show have apologised for a controversial video that mocked the Hindu kavadi dance, a sacred ritual performed during Thaipusam in devotion to Lord Murugan.

The video, which has now been removed from the station’s social media platforms, showed the DJs mimicking the kavadi dance while chanting “Vel Vel” and laughing.

In a post on Era FM’s Instagram account, Nabil Ahmad, Azad Jasmin, and Radin Amir Affendi Ahmad Aruani apologised for the video and acknowledged that it was insensitive, especially towards the Indian community.

“We never intended to offend anyone, and we deeply respect the beliefs and values of every individual. We will be more careful in the future,” the post said.

“We are also always open to receiving comments and criticism to improve ourselves, especially from our loyal Era listeners. Once again, we sincerely apologise for the unintentional mistake we have made. Please forgive us.”

The clip drew widespread criticism, with many calling it offensive to Hindu traditions.

MIC deputy president and Tapah MP M Saravanan had demanded a public apology and urged the government to take action against the station.

In response, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said he had received complaints from various parties regarding the video.

“I have directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to conduct a detailed investigation, including summoning Astro and the radio station’s management to the MCMC headquarters to provide a full explanation.

“This is to ensure that appropriate action can be taken based on existing regulations and laws,” he said in a statement today.
