KUALA LUMPUR — DAP’s Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh has urged authorities to take immediate action against independent preacher Zamri Vinoth over his recent social media post mocking Hindu religious practices, warning that any delay could create an impression of double standards.
The former deputy law minister said the remarks made by Zamri regarding the Hindu ritual of carrying the Kavadi during Thaipusam were grossly irresponsible and insensitive.
“There can be no doubt that Zamri’s comments on his post, in which he touched on the Hindu practice of carrying the Kavadi during Thaipusam, are grossly irresponsible and insensitive, which is further aggravated by the fact that such comments were made so soon after insults were made by the Era FM DJs who, at least, have apologised for their behaviour,” he said in a statement today.
Ramkarpal also expressed doubt that Zamri would apologise, citing past instances where he allegedly made inflammatory remarks without facing consequences.
“It is unlikely that Zamri will apologise as well as he has escaped the punishment of the law in the past for making other inflammatory remarks,” he said.
The MP stressed that action must be taken against Zamri, similar to the action taken against the Era FM DJs, comedian Harith Iskander, and social media user Cecilia Yap.
“A failure to do so will give the impression of selective prosecution against the DJs, Harith and Cecilia while Zamri is allowed to commit such blatant abuses of the law with impunity,” he said.
Ramkarpal also pointed out that Zamri’s remarks could be in violation of sections 504 and 505 of the Penal Code and called for immediate investigations.
He further urged the government to act under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Act 1998 by removing Zamri’s post to prevent it from spreading and inciting further unrest.
“Racial harmony must be the priority of the government, and I believe the majority of people of all races want to see the government being firm in matters which may cause disharmony and disrupt the delicate racial fabric of this country,” he said.
Meanwhile, MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan also condemned Zamri’s remarks, describing them as disgraceful and deeply offensive to the Hindu community.
Saravanan, in a statement, said the preacher’s comments showed a lack of respect towards Hindus in the country’s multireligious society.
He referred to Zamri’s social media post, in which the preacher allegedly claimed that people do not find it insulting when “Hindus chant Vel Vel and dance as if they were possessed (macam orang kena rasuk) while intoxicated (mabuk todi).”
“I strongly condemn the irresponsible act of the independent preacher. This is extremely disrespectful and deeply offensive to the Hindu community.
“This is clearly against the 3R stand of the Madani government. There are numerous police complaints against him. Hence, the police must, once and for all, take action against him,” Saravanan said.
The Tapah MP called on the authorities to act swiftly, urging Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure that Zamri is charged.
“I call upon PDRM to take immediate action against Zamri Vinoth for his derogatory Facebook post.
“I appeal to the Home Minister to order Zamri to be charged immediately, as this is not the first time the controversial preacher has insulted Hinduism. Each time, he makes excuses for his actions,” he added.

Zamri Vinoth should be re-sunat-ised as his punishment, for his misbehaviour and in giving his religion an undeserved ill-reputation.
