PETALING JAYA
Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow’s decision to contest for a seat on DAP’s central executive committee (CEC) signals a resurgence in his political confidence, according to an analyst.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said Chow initially appeared uncertain about the level of support for him within the party, which may have influenced his decision not to contest in the Penang DAP election last September.

However, his desire to defend his CEC seat suggests he now believes he has strong backing not only in Penang but also at the national level.

“The CEC is crucial because it’s where all major decisions for DAP are made. I believe his perception of national-level support influenced his decision to stay in the CEC,” he told FMT.

Azmi also suggested that Chow’s latest move could also indicate a willingness to run at the next general election (GE16).

“This latest move, along with the state Pakatan Harapan leadership’s decision to retain him as Penang PH chief, will likely boost his confidence.

“That’s why he made the decision to stay in the CEC, and I believe he is positioning himself to contest in the next general election,” he said.

On Feb 23, Chow confirmed that he would contest in the March 16 CEC polls, saying a leadership position was important since he was still chief minister.

Last week, he was retained as Penang PH chairman until 2028.

Meanwhile, University Sains Malaysia’s Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid said Chow’s move was a pragmatic one, aimed at maintaining influence in both the state and national arenas.

“Chow apparently had a change of heart and realised the importance of aligning his state and party posts in order to command the widest respect from party rank and file.

“This will also prevent internal rebellion from disgruntled elements,” he said.

He added that Chow may also be compensating for his absence in the state party leadership by focusing on the national level.
