Sibu boy Tiong shines light
on city in Visit Malaysia
campaign
The tourism minister describes Sibu city as a year-round tourism highlight given its rich history and natural landscapes.
Tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing, who was born in the city, said the newly-launched Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign was a golden opportunity to shine a light on Sarawak’s attractions, particularly Sibu.
He said Sibu’s appeal ranged from its history, having been founded by Sarawak’s first White Rajah, James Brooke, to its multicultural heritage and lush natural environment.
“It should be positioned as a highlight in the tourism calendar year-round, showcasing our hospitality, multicultural heritage, natural landscapes, and more,” he said at a Chinese New Year gathering in the city, the Borneo Post post reported.
Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg, who was at the event, urged the minister to give priority to promoting Sarawak in the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, especially with the state to have its own airline soon.
Tiong said Sibu had a wide range of traditional Chinese delicacies produced by the diverse dialect groups that reside there.
“Not only can travellers savour these traditional dishes, they can also gain insight into the history, heritage, and culture of a place, a community, and a people through its cuisine,” said Tiong, who is currently MP for Bintulu.
