Chinese signboard in Kelantan haunts PAS chief after Perak objection

TIKTOK user Wan Hadi criticised PAS Central information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari over his objection to the trilingual signboard at Ayer Tawar Public Market in Perak.

Wan Hadi pointed out that Dataran Cheng Ho in Kelantan also features Chinese alongside Malay, with Malay placed below Chinese yet Fadhli did not question it. In contrast, the Ayer Tawar signboard places Malay at the top.

His criticism comes after Fadhli questioned if the trilingual signage was Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) policy.

The recent unveiling of the upgraded Ayer Tawar Market in Perak by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming sparked debate after Ahmad Fadhli questioned the need for a trilingual signboard in Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and Tamil.

“What’s worse is that the Malay language is placed below the Chinese language (at Dataran Cheng Ho in Kelantan). I want to ask Ahmad Fadhli – why is this acceptable? There’s Chinese writing too. Why don’t you question your own state?”

“At Ayer Tawar Market, Malay is placed at the top,” he said in a TikTok video that has already garnered over 70,000 views.

Previously, Ahmad Fadhli, in a Facebook post, questioned the need for three languages on the signboard of Ayer Tawar Public Market, which is displayed on the building’s wall.

Furthermore, Wan Hadi emphasised that the entrance arch of Dataran Cheng Ho had been in place for years, long before the PAS politician entered politics.

“Why are you only now questioning the agenda of KPKT under Nga Kor Ming for placing three languages on the Ayer Tawar Public Market signboard? But at Dataran Cheng Ho, you didn’t question it,” he stressed. — Feb 22, 2025
