Petty Chegubard trolled for harping on church backdrop of Steven Sim’s townhall session poster

Editor’s Note: In his latest Facebook posting, Chegubard lamented that “a 51-year-old Malay female ministry officer” has been instructed to lodge a police report against his pervasive if not provocative post of just enquiring if the Human Resources Ministry is normalising a practice that is perceived as an insult against Islam.
MADANI government backers have come out to defend Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong after staunch Bersatu activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin a.k.a. Chegubard accused him of attempting “to display religious equality” by using a church backdrop to publicise a recent townhall session.
The controversial former PKR activist from 1999 to 2016 prior to his sacking has accused Sim who is also the Penang DAP chairman for normalising a practice that is seen as “an exaggerated push for pluralism and liberalism”.
...See moreFor context, the seemingly church backdrop had appeared in a promotional poster for the Gig Workers Bill 2025 townhall session that took place at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) on Feb 19.
“What’s wrong with making a banner/backdrop with a church background?” digital creator Muhammad Najib (@muhammadnajib79) lashed out at Chegubard on X.
“There is nothing wrong with that except that we’re Malay Muslims who are easily offended, whose faith is as thin as an onion peel and who always think badly of our fellow countrymen of a different race and faith.”
1. Di mana salahnya buat banner/backdrop berlatar belakangkan gereja?
2. Tak ada salahnya, melainkan kalau kita ini Melayu Islam yang mudah tersinggung, imannya senipis kulit bawang dan sentiasa bersangka buruk kepada saudara senegara yang berlainan bangsa dan anutan dengan kita… Show more
Sarcastically, the poster argued that Sim who is also the Bukit Mertajam MP has his own aesthetic reasons for choosing such backdrop for an event which is deemed “very important to protect the interests of gig workers, the majority of whom are our Malay Muslims”.
“If Sim were to use a mosque background in contrast, then he could be accused of riding on or belittling Islam,” asserted Muhammad Najib.
Fellow social media influencer Roman Akramovich (@SyedAkramin) reckoned that the event poster’s background only depicts “medieval gothic architecture (ribbed vaults, pointed arches and flying buttresses)”.
“It’s a popular architectural style. It has nothing to do with churches. There’s no need to waste time on trivial things like this,” he rebutted Chegubard.

Added Roman Akramovich: “Steven Sim holds a townhall session on the Gig Workers Bill. This is the first time in Malaysian history that we have a special act to protect the fate of 1.1 million Grab, Foodpanda, Lalamove etc. workers.
“But what did Chegu Bard do? He spread slander and hatred against Steven Sim.”
Another pro-Pakatan Harapan (PH) digital creator said he could not fathom “what is going on in the minds of those PN (Perikatan Nasional) folks”.
“If they don’t spread slander, they spread hatred. Will they be satisfied after the races in Malaysia fight?” wondered bumi langit (@bumilangit).
Apa la dalam otak orang PN ni? Kalau tak tabur fitnah, dia tabur kebencian. Lepas kaum2 dalam Malaysia bergaduh baru puas hati gamaknya??
@chegubard kalau takde kerja sangat, pergi apply kerja mystep buat poster utk KESUMA
“To Chegubard, if there’s not much work for you to do, perhaps you can apply for a job at MySTEP (Malaysia Short-Term Employment Programme) to design posters for KESUMA (Malay abbreviation for the Human Resources Ministry).” – Feb 26, 2025
