Police this afternoon shot and killed three men in Rawang, Selangor, whom they suspected were part of a syndicate that has been active in stealing four-wheel drive vehicles.

According to Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, the 12pm incident happened when a police team tracking the suspects tried to arrest them for investigation.

He said police ordered the men, who were in a rented sedan, to stop their vehicle but they opened fire at the cops and sped away.

“A high-speed chase ensued during which police also returned fire and killed the suspects.

“The distance from a housing area where police first tried to stop the suspects and this flyover where the chase ended is about 750m,” he told reporters at the scene at Taman Kota Emerald.

The flyover where the incident occurred is located above the North-South Expressway.

Shuhaily said police found a revolver and a semi-automatic pistol in the suspects’ vehicle, along with two parang (machete) and several electronic devices they believe were used for stealing cars.

Police have identified two of the deceased as local men aged 40 and 43, each with a history of 24 and 44 previous criminal cases, he said, adding that checks revealed both were also wanted for several cases.

The third suspect, Shuhaily told the press, was yet to be identified as police did not find any identification document on his body.

Shuhaily said police have been on to the syndicate since last year but did not rule out that their activities could have stretched much earlier.

Investigators suspected the gang is responsible for at least 17 vehicle thefts between Jan 1 and today across several states, including in Selangor, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, and Penang.

Shuhaily added that police are working to ascertain the identity of other members of the syndicate.
