COMMENT | A litany of unilateral moves made by US President Donald Trump, already considered to be a contemptible person who faces near universal disapproval and hence a fink is fast showing himself to be a fascist too, with strong autocratic, dictatorial tendencies.
Mixed with a good dose of madness and a lack of method and rationale in his moronic economic policies, the man is fast eroding as the most ridiculous of modern-day leaders of a significant nation.
It’s all terribly funny, if only it was not so serious and that his actions would reverberate far and wide.
At some point in time, if he goes ahead with his outlandish measures, then the rest of the world will have to think up some way of countering it so that the world does not become a dangerous place for all.
The first thing he has done is to issue orders to round up all undocumented migrants and deport them as if they were the people responsible for the US’ woes. What it will lead to is a crunching shortage of vital manpower needs, which will cause labour shortages the likes of which the US has never seen.
A fascist, racist proposition
On top of that, this is a fascist racist proposition because it is the browns and blacks who would be affected the most.
Many of them have been in the country for years and have children who have been born in the US and hence became US citizens, a right he is trying to remove.
Parents may be separated from their children by this. But there is a temporary reprieve - a US court has stopped the move for the time being until a hearing is held. But if it goes to the Supreme Court, what will happen with Trump appointees dominating the bench? That’s to be seen.
Ironically, the First Lady of the US is an immigrant who, together with her parents, may not have been US citizens if Trumpian regulations were already in place back then.

Heck, the entire US is a nation of immigrants who stole the lands from the original inhabitants centuries ago and treated them really badly.
Why tariffs won’t work
Next, Trump sees tariffs as a solution to US job creation. But jobs are not the problem (it might, if all immigrants without papers were removed at one go), with an unemployment rate of four percent, near full employment. Income equality is.
Trump does not address that at all. The oligarchs support him in a mutually advantageous position.
And if he imposes tariffs to force other countries to relocate their operations to the US, then prices in the US will rise, putting paid to his aim of controlling prices in the US.
Inflation is some three percent a year in the US, and the target is to get it down to two percent. But with tariffs, Trump can kiss that goodbye. It will lead to sharply higher living expenses.
Bullying the world
His foreign policy pronouncements so far have been an absolute disaster. First, he angered and insulted Canadians by suggesting Canada become the 51st state.
Then he talked about annexing the Panama Canal and promptly demanded that Denmark sell Greenland to the US.
And then comes his flabbergasting suggestion that Palestinians be cleared out of Gaza and that Egypt and Jordan take them, some 2.5 million people.
Trump, often wrong with facts and figures, said it involved perhaps 1.5 million people. There are already a similar number of Palestinians in the West Bank, which was part of Jordan before.
This is against a people who already suffered so much under the hands of the British, the Israelis, and the Americans to rival the atrocities and genocide, yes, genocide, committed by the Nazis during the second world war against, ironically the Jews, who now punish the Palestinians.
Gaza in December 2024
Trump will push the Europeans too and demand that they take more of the defence responsibilities. Push them too hard, and they will do exactly that.
France and the UK may increase their nuclear and military capability. So will a reluctant Germany, which may be forced to go nuclear to fill the gap.
By some estimates, on a purchasing power parity basis, the EU is already larger than the US, and so is China. So economic dominance is not a given in the years ahead.
That could change for the military too as realignments take place in the face of unreliability of the US as an ally.
Trump thinks he can bully the world with his economic and military might. But he will realise soon enough that what he will provoke is not submission but revolt against this brand of fascism, greed and power for the elite - the already fabulously rich, in the guise of making America great again.
Eventually, most Americans will see Trump, like almost all the rest of the world, for what he is - a power-crazy, money-grabbing, conniving convict, sexual predator, and crook who gamed the system and rules the roost. The sooner he goes, the better for America and the world.

😂😁😅😆😊👍👍👍
The electoral process will remove Trump and his supporters eventually when America suffers, but by that time a lot of damage would already be done.
The only thing we can do is sit down, grit our teeth, wait, and do what we can.
P GUNASEGARAM says history is littered with those leaders who hindered real progress. Trump is one of them.

ReplyDeleteOur work is severely impacted by Trump's latest foreign aid policy. We were instructed to cease all work & not incur any expenses after January 25th, for up to 90 days pending review by the US government. This means that for 3 months, most of JWM employees will not get their salaries and our project activities will not run.
