Strength from tragedy: Story of a mother’s suffering gains widespread attention
By CS Ming
WHEN life gives you lemons, make lemonades. Easier said than done, but if there is anyone looking for a role model, they should look no further than this tough-as-nails single mother from China.
Apparently her hardship was brought to light in a video on TikTok which was claimed to be the most popular now.
In the video, the lady could be seen selling food stuff by the side of the road while piggybacking her second child.
According to the brief interview, her eldest son was born with congenital heart disease which caused her first husband to commit suicide by jumping into the river.
Disaster came in the form of her second husband who abandoned her after her in-laws refused to accept her eldest son from another marriage.
Her predicament has since garnered an outpouring of sympathy from the online community from China and beyond.
Here in Malaysia, the atmosphere was no different. Netizen Amer Hamzah said, “There’s dust in my male eyes.”
Indera claimed she was laughing and smiling to hide her anguish although it was obvious she was being pressured. “Hopefully there is sunshine for her and her children.
Another netizen wondered who was chopping the onions. Then there was chickentender who wanted to give her a hug and some money.
Others could be seen hurling condemnation at her husbands for leaving her in such a state. “Even the ex husband is not as strong as her,” said Nurain fatin.
Also, Fishy fishy cautioned the men to think carefully before getting married.
“At the end of the day, the woman is the one who suffers as she has to care and raise the child by herself. Guys can run away and pretend nothing happened,” said Fishy fishy.
Syazwan Zanini further pointed out that suicide does not solve the problem. “During the PKP I was terribly stressed. I nearly killed myself,” he said.
One netizen admired the resilience displayed by the brave lady, adding that she was already stressed when her child did not want to eat her cooking.
With all the attention the lady is getting and the aid that she is beginning to receive, we like to think that the social media has its benefits too.
It appears the digital world is giving more voice to the voiceless people who have been ignored by the mainstream media for far too long. This is a subtle evolution, and in the right direction.
As for the poor single mother, we can only hope that her situation will draw the attention of kind-hearted people, not just those who are looking for entertainment on the web.—Jan 24, 2025
