Puad: Dr M is the one 'fly'-ing around, Umno a venomous snake

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi took a more diplomatic approach in responding to Dr Mahathir Mohamad, but Mohd Puad Zarkashi did not hold back and added a reptilian twist to the ongoing “predator vs insect” debate.

In a Facebook post, the Umno supreme council member likened his party to a “venomous snake” and the nonagenarian - soon to reach a century - to a “fly”, despite the insect's life cycle lasting no more than a month.

Puad argued that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s faction was responsible for turning Mahathir into a “fly” and forced him to “fly around”.

“He (Mahathir) was kicked out of Bersatu because he was accused of making Bersatu a fly for DAP, which led to a crushing defeat in the Tanjung Piai by-election.

“Tun M was forced to fly around like a fly, searching for a new place,” he added.

Puad was responding to Mahathir’s claim that Umno had accepted its role as a mere "fly" in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Madani government out of fear of DAP.

The "fly" controversy began when DAP leader Nga Kor Ming swatted firebrand Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh over the “ham” sandwich issue.

However, Mahathir, with his signature political spin, alleged that Nga - who described himself as a "lion" - had dismissed the entire Umno as nothing more than an insect.

By-election wins prove it

In his post, Puad reminded Mahathir that it was he who sought to turn Umno, the party he led for over two decades, into a "fly."

“He attempted to destroy Umno and replace it with Bersatu,” he noted.

“Umno is not bothered by being called flies. It has proven itself to be a venomous snake in the Nenggiri and Mahkota by-elections,” he added.

Yesterday, Zahid had refused to be drawn into a mudslinging match with Mahathir, choosing not to dwell on the matter beyond saying that he respected the former premier’s age but not his opinions.
