FMT:
Brickbats for proposal to
rename Jalan Hang Tuah
‘Jonker Walk 2.0’
State opposition leader says Melaka should name streets after historical figures from the Malay sultanate era.
Yadzil said Jalan Hang Tuah had rich historical significance and was already a prime tourist attraction that did not need to be renamed to attract more visitors.
The Bemban assemblyman added that Jalan Hang Tuah was one of the main sites for Malay businesses.
“The ‘Hang Tuah’ name needs to be preserved as a symbol of Melaka’s rich history.
“In fact, we should name streets in Melaka after historical figures from the Malay sultanate to reflect our nationalism and loyalty to our country,” said Yadzil, a Bersatu Supreme Council member.
DAP’s Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong had proposed renaming Jalan Hang Tuah to boost the local economy, citing the success of the Jonker Walk night market.
Low claimed traders feared that Jalan Hang Tuah would be particularly quiet this year with the annual Ramadan bazaar at the street relocated to another location in Banda Hilir.
Earlier today, executive councillor Rais Yasin said the state government had yet to discuss the proposal.
