Rumours abound that Tun M met with 17 MPs in a bid to topple Madani
REPORTS have surfaced claiming that former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad held a late-night meeting with 17 Perikatan Nasional (PN) MPs, along with Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, to strategise against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s government.
The meeting, allegedly lasting until 2am, is said to have been a high-level discussion aimed at plotting a move to unseat the unity government. The claim reportedly originates from a key PAS insider in Selangor.
While there have been no reactions from Hishammuddin or Dr Mahathir on the matter, some of the followers of the elderly politician posted on X saying the meeting happened.
In a post, account Poster Malaysian Affairs said: “Just received a report that Dr Mahathir held a meeting with 17 PN MPs, brokered by Hishammuddin, lasting until 2 am last night.
“They were actively strategising to topple the Anwar. The source is a key PAS insider.”
The post received multiple reactions from users, including those who regularly show support to Anwar. The Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters dismissed the rumours, reminding the opposition of the multiple failed attempts to ‘tebuk atap’ since the last general elections in November 2022.
Some are saying it will soon be August but are doubtful that there will be a change of regime. August is mentioned because it was a key date in the opposition’s attempt to get some MPs from the Madani government to quit the coalition and help PN form a new government in 2023. The attempt failed.
In a video posted by a pro-PH account on X, Dr Mahathir is seen talking to known opposition supporters. Some were impressed that Dr Mahathir could still hold discussions until after 2am and is seen standing straight among a bunch of supporters. — Jan 18, 2024
