He is accused of sexually assaulting two Year Six students at a primary school in Melaka on Jan 8.
Azhar Mohamad, 44, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him before judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah.
According to the charge sheet, Azhar was accused of sexually assaulting the two 12-year-old girls at around 9.30am at a primary school in Melaka Tengah on Jan 8.
The two charges were framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a punishment of up to 20 years’ imprisonment upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nor Azizah Yusof asked the court to set bail at RM30,000 with one surety.
Azhar, who was unrepresented, sought a reduced bail amount, saying he needs to care for his mother and three children, aged seven, 11, and 13.
Rohatul fixed bail at RM21,000 with one surety and ordered Azhar not to tamper with the prosecution witnesses.
She also ordered him to report to the nearest police station every month until the conclusion of the case.
The court fixed Feb 17 for case re-mention and the appointment of a lawyer for the accused.
