Is it all in/on the head?

What's the difference between selendang, hijab, tudung and burka?

I ask because I see someone jumping up and down macam kera kena belacan wakakaka over some sweetie but obviously bête noire Chinese politicians with traditional Malayan headgear.

But see follows:

traditional selendang
my (late) mum and aunties wore them as accessories to their sarung kebaya

good Catholic women like my matey Lucia Lai would probably wear one too when entering a church for prayers

traditional selendang
when not covering head, worn loosely like shawl over shoulders, yummy

hijab

tudung

tudung

Any difference between hijab and tudung? I have difficulty seeing any.

burka

burka

Forget about the desert-garb of burka, which function is to minimize moisture loss in a dry environment. If Malaysian sweeties want to wear them in our hot humid climate, then that's their entitlement.

But do you know who were the original wearers of burka-hijab in Malaya (note: not Malaysia)?

No, not Malays as you may suspect, and who in our country's earlier days wore mainly selendang.

The original wearers of burka-hijab in Malaya were Chinese women!!!

Yes, Chinese women who worked at construction sites hauling bricks, wood and cement up the scaffolding of buildings being constructed, and those who tapped rubber trees as well as those female dulang washers at tin mines.

Chinese female coolies

I met one in My unforgettable rubber tapping experience

Wait, I inadvertently missed out some prominent original wearers of hujab-tudung-like garb:

my aunties studied under them at Light Street Convent

So what are these following two sweeties wearing?

sweetie Teo Nie Ching
DAP MP for Kulai

sweetie Hannah Yeoh
DAP ADUN for Subang Jaya &
Speaker, DUN Selangor

But really, does it matter what they wear?

Perhaps it does if you're macam kera kena belacan when you see them, whenever you see them, wakakaka.

It's all in (not on) the head, wakakaka!

  1. Wakakakaka.... this is really a good one KTee!

A woman scorn that even cuts & paste photos for comparison & exgesis... If one notice, most of the targets seem to be nicer looking sweeties.... giving one the impression Ms. M really has an issue somewhere....

But playboy bunny or otherwise.... like Penang larng.... same appreciation for beauty.... wakakakaka

    1. No point trying to have discourse or to engage with her in a sensible manner; her sense of reasoning have been warped to such an extent that she manufactures on a daily basis all sorts of mockery name-calling for her audience who are hooked like addicts. Even on unrelated issues she can somehow link to her favorite targets for bashing, e.g. when the PR sweeties visits a mosque wearing the tudung (which is required) but she somehow show photos of proof of attemps to proselytize, insult Islam etc and her audience will lap it up and say this will lead to May13 ...

  4. Most Muslims have no issues with ordinary non-Muslim women who put on traditional Malay dress or selendang/tudung in appropriate situations.

There is, however, a sense of hypocrisy and deliberate insult when a Playboy bunny tries to garner publicity by putting on a tudung.

Playboy bunnies make a lucrative living baring all in their birthday suit.
How they make money is their private affair, but when a person with such a public persona does a photography shoot wearing traditional Muslim dress, there is a sense of derision and mockery attached to what she is doing.

  7. I also remember the selendang worn by my Indonesian aunties. It's the most beautiful of all the head-coverings above...

... the abandonment of the selendang also marks the beginning of more 'orthodox Islamist' influence in South East Asia.

Also, did old women in Malaya/Malaysia ever wear the simple round cap, like many old Indonesian women? This also seems to be going out of fashion, as women choose to cover their whole head and neck.
