Shelters in Lebanon overcrowded as ‘huge humanitarian crisis’ persists
By Obaida HittoReporting from Tyre, southern Lebanon
The Israelis are telling people to go north of the Zahrani River, but even if they get north of the river, there are very few options for these displaced people. Over a million Lebanese citizens have been displaced since March 2.
There are 600 government-run shelters distributed throughout the country – in schools, in government buildings and other various locations.
But they’re all overflowing with people, operating at maximum capacity. So anyone else who is trying to find shelter, at least temporarily, is going to have to look for a relative to stay with, rent a temporary home or stay in a hotel.
However, for the large majority of people, we’re seeing them stay in public parks, in tents.
In the capital, Beirut, in many of the neighbourhoods, there are hundreds of people grouped into small communities that are trying to make ends meet.
The government has been overwhelmed by this huge humanitarian crisis – the largest mass displacement in just a couple of months in the history of Lebanon.

Three killed, at least a dozen wounded in Israeli air strikes on southern Lebanon villages
Three people have been killed and more than a dozen injured by Israeli air strikes early on Saturday morning, as attacks escalate in southern Lebanon, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.
Two of those killed were identified as a father and son: Zuhair Ahmad Hashim and his son Ali, who were killed in an air strike by Israeli forces in the early hours of Saturday morning at their home in the al-Marj neighbourhood of Ansar, north of Tyre. Seven other family members were also injured, Lebanon’s NNA said.
The agency added that Israeli forces also carried out an air attack this morning on the Sharifa-Habbouch-Nabatieh road, killing one civilian and leaving another in a critical condition.
An Israeli air strike was also reported this morning on the road leading to the Nabih Berri Governmental Hospital in Nabatieh, with reports of three people injured.
Lebanon’s NNA also said that at about 8:15am local time (05:15 GMT), the town of Ansar was hit by an air strike that destroyed the al-Khalil shopping centre in the town centre, while at 09:30am (06:30GMT), the town of Zabadini was hit by a series of Israeli air attacks.
