Bersatu slams ‘coordinated attack’ amid talk of return to PH

Azmin Ali takes aim at Hamzah Zainudin, accusing those behind the 'Bangkok Move' of spreading these rumours

Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali denied that Bersatu leaders had met their counterparts in PKR to discuss working with PH.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu has slammed rumours that the party would return to Pakatan Harapan, describing such speculation as a coordinated attack launched by its rivals, particularly former deputy president Hamzah Zainudin.

Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali denied that the party will cooperate with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government or that Bersatu leaders had met their counterparts in PKR to discuss working with PH.

Azmin said these were malicious and baseless accusations propagated by those trying to cover up their failures in the attempted “Bangkok Move”.

The Bangkok Move refers to a meeting between Hamzah and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi purportedly to reshape the country’s leadership.

Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan, a close ally of Hamzah, had said the meeting focused on uniting the country’s Malay parties.

Azmin claimed Bersatu was being targeted by this coordinated attack as it was receiving growing support from Malaysians, especially professionals.

“Bersatu’s brand, coupled with the excellent performance of its leaders, especially the tested and proven Muhyiddin Yassin, is attracting Malaysians.

“Our moderate, inclusive and progressive image as well as our people-centric policies have generated widespread support.

“Bersatu remains resolute in defending our political cooperation in Perikatan Nasional to build a strong, honourable and progressive Malaysia for all Malaysians,” he said in a statement.

Speculation over Bersatu’s ties with PH surfaced following tensions between Bersatu and PAS within PN. This came after PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang announced that the Islamic party was reassessing its ties with Bersatu.

DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook has dismissed rumours of Bersatu rejoining PH. Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz also rubbished the speculation.
