KUALA LUMPUR: A backbencher has suggested that MPs boycott events organised by the US embassy, saying MPs who do not hold government positions should take a stand on Washington’s role in the recent attack on Iran.
Acknowledging the need for government officials to attend such events to maintain cordial ties with the US, Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi) said MPs who were not members of the administration could still make a political statement by avoiding US embassy functions.
“We normal MPs should boycott events organised by the US embassy. As backbenchers who hold no positions in government, perhaps we should just not go.
“If we get invitations for their Independence Day celebration, let’s not attend. We would show that we can no longer accept what they are doing,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.
The DAP man was interjecting in Suhaizan Kaiat’s (PH-Pulai) debate on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s ministerial statement on the US-Israel attack on Iran.
Suhaizan said he agreed with Syahredzan’s proposal.
The US and Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran on Saturday, killing Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, among other senior leaders.
This prompted retaliatory strikes by Iran on Israel and several Arab countries, including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
