AGC must explain DNAA
for man who slapped non-
Muslim, says MP
Jimmy Puah asks if the charge framed against Abdul Razak Ismail was defective, saying clarity is necessary given the public interest in the case.

Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah told FMT that clarity on the request from the prosecution at the magistrates’ court this morning was crucial given the public interest in the case.
“What is the reason for the DNAA? Was the charge defective? When will he be re-charged? This development doesn’t inspire the confidence of the public.
“This is a case that has attracted a great amount of public interest. So the deputy public prosecutor needs to explain the reason (for the DNAA). I hope the AGC can assure us (that fresh charges would be filed soon),” the PKR man said.
Earlier today, Abdul Razak Ismail, 65, pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a man at a shopping mall in Johor Bahru on March 16.
He later disputed the facts of the case read out in court, prompting magistrate A Shaarmini to reject the guilty plea and order that the case go to trial.
However, before a trial date could be set, deputy public prosecutor Nur Fatihah Nizam requested for a DNAA to be given as the prosecution had been ordered to refer the case to the AGC.
Previously, the victim said on X that he was having a meal at a convenience store in a Johor Bahru shopping mall when a man asked him if he was Chinese.
When he replied that he was, the man demanded to see his MyKad. He claimed that after he refused to do so, the man became angry and slapped him several times.
The elderly man’s son defused the situation and apologised on his behalf. The victim said he accepted the apology by the man’s son, but still needed to make a police report as it was a physical assault in a public place.
