Perak preacher faces
probe for not delivering
anti-slander sermon
The menteri besar, Saarani Mohamad, said he suspected something was amiss after the state Islamic department’s sermon was not delivered in Parit Buntar.
Saarani suspected that something was amiss after the preacher in Parit Buntar opted to deliver the Friday sermon prepared by the Penang Islamic religious affairs department instead, Bernama reported.
“There may be something wrong. I believe the department will investigate, and determine whether this incident actually (occurred).
“Friday sermons are not prepared on an ad hoc basis. They are written one or two months in advance and are based on significant events (in Islamic history),” he was quoted as saying.
The menteri besar did not name the preacher. His statement came after a former state assemblyman had alleged on social media that the khatib did not deliver the Perak sermon.
The selection of Perak’s Friday sermon, “Keburukan Fitnah: Pengajaran Dari Peristiwa Al-Ifki”, which focussed on why slander was bad, had been questioned by Perak PAS ulama council member Rif’aat Razman.
Rif’aat said the sermon appeared to be aimed at his father, Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria, who drew controversy over the past few months for several accusations made against government leaders, for which he later retracted and apologised.
However, the Perak religious department said the sermon was not aimed at anyone in particular and had been prepared based on the historical incident of slander made against Aisyah, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad.
Earlier this week, Razman apologised for claiming that youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh of DAP was linked to the Yeoh family of the conglomerate YTL Corporation Bhd.
