Zaid Ibrahim said a strong Malay-led government must comprise MPs from PAS, Bersatu and Umno, and is dependent on MCA winning back the Chinese vote.

PETALING JAYA
A former federal minister has dismissed talk of an imminent change in government taking place, describing rumours currently making its rounds on social media as “fiction”.

Zaid Ibrahim said the individual making the claims via a poster featuring three prominent Malay leaders appears keen to see “Malay unity coming to fruition”.

“Wake up, please.

“There will not be a change of government through MPs getting together to reach the magic number of 112,” he said in a post on X, referring to the number of seats needed for a simple majority in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat.

Zaid said that for a strong Malay-led government to be formed, Malay MPs in PAS, Bersatu and Umno must win 90 seats, a target that “is reachable collectively”.

He said they must also persuade MCA to win back the Chinese vote, by making themselves out to be “more Chinese than the DAP”.

Let MCA go around the country asking for allocations for Chinese schools and small and medium enterprises, a reduction of the number of Malays in the civil service, and more betting licences.

The Malay parties must learn to control themselves, he said. “Don’t attack MCA. After all, MCA is a Barisan Nasional component.”

That is how a Malay-led government with fair, non-Malay representation can be established, he said.

“That’s the more realistic way for a reset. Forget about the poster.”

The poster making its rounds names Umno’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob as prime minister, with PAS’s Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar and Bersatu’s Hamzah Zainudin as his deputies.

It quotes an unnamed “reliable source” as saying that a “huge change” will take place during the current Dewan Rakyat sitting.

“Malay Muslims unite for the wellbeing of Malaysians,” the poster reads.
