Summary
- Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin flexes after a DAP MP raised concerns about preacher Zakir Naik's recent speech in Perlis.
- Asri says he had been keeping silent on DAP out of respect for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and some other respectful DAP leaders.
Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has expressed his readiness to "face-off" with a DAP MP.
This is in response to Jelutong MP RSN Rayer raising concerns about controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik making a speech in Perlis recently.
In a Facebook post today, without naming anyone specifically, Asri (above, right) said he sensed that the MP intended to "resume battle" with him, as Zakir was speaking at the mufti's event.
"If that DAP MP is eager to 'sell', I will, insyaAllah, be willing to 'buy', just as I did when the 'departed' DAP political figure was 'selling'," he said.
The “departed” (gemulah) politician is P Ramasamy, who clashed with Asri after the latter linked him to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Dr Zakir Naik
Yesterday, Rayer had questioned why Zakir was allowed to speak at an event in Kangar, Perlis on Feb 2.
Police previously banned Zakir from public speeches in 2019, following a ceramah in which he made controversial remarks that touched on the sensitivities of Hindu and Chinese Malaysians.
It was later revealed that the India-born preacher's latest public appearance was sanctioned by Asri.
Asri said today that he had remained silent on several matters involving DAP out of respect for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and national stability.
Additionally, he said his restraint was also due to the presence of DAP leaders who respect the sensitivities of Malaysians.
