UMNO Youth declares war against halal logo abusers; declares itself enforcer to clamp down on menace
IN the wake of the KK Super Mart’s “cheese & ham sandwich saga” which he described as betraying the trust of Muslims, UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has declared the wing as an enforcer to eradicate abuses to the so-called JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) halal accreditation.
In so doing, the Merlimau state assemblyman said UMNO Youth will be rolling out a nationwide “Pastikan Halal Yang Ori Baru Beli” (Only Buy After Ensuring Halal Authenticity) campaign.
Not entirely letting the 24-hour continence store chain off the hook after it confirmed that the actual culprit was the supplier of the pre-packed chicken ham and cheese sandwich, Akmal further warned that he would personally ensure that all abusers of halal certification “land in hot soup”.
“To all Malaysians, do download the Verify Halal app but before that I would like to seek the help from all layers of society to verify the authenticity of the halal logo on the products before making a purchase,” he pointed out in a Facebook post.
“If not found in the system, please inform UMNO Youth who will ensure that these fraudsters are severely dealt with for betraying the trust of Muslim consumers.”
Added the Melaka Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman”
“Don’t because you want your product to be marketable, you cheat Muslims in this country … so to all Muslims and Malaysians at large, do ensure that you only make a purchase after ensuring the halal authenticity. This is the time for us to eradicate the betrayal of Muslim consumer trust.”
Earlier, Akmal has seemingly mellowed down on his ante against KK Mart after the latter issued a statement that it had on Jan 10 issued a letter of demand to the ham & cheese sandwich supplier Shake and Bake Café through its legal team David Gurupatham & Koay (Advocates & Solicitors) in addition to having and filed a police report on Jan 11.
At the same time, the 24-hour continence store chain said it has also suspended all business dealings with the supplier while clarifying that only 16 KK Concept Stores carry such product, including two at the Universiti Malaya campus in Kuala Lumpur which have since been closed by the university management.
“KK Mart must nevertheless take the wrap for its negligence (of not verifying authenticity of the halal certification) despite claiming that it was cheated by the vendor,” asserted the Russia-trained medical doctor.
“Although we leave it to the police and authorities to do take the necessary action, we (still) demand stringent action against the traitor vendor for using fake halal logo.”
For the record, JAKIM has confirmed that the product in question did not have a Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) while its producer is not a SPHM holder following an on-site inspection with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) on Jan 10.
“Therefore, the company’s action of printing the Malaysian halal logo on the product label is an offence under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, namely the Trade Descriptions (Halal Certification and Marking) Order 2011 and legal action has been taken by KPDN.” – Jan 15, 2025
