too, says DAP MP
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng calls the Islamic party ‘ultra-hypocritical’ after its reaction to a Christmas celebration at the housing and local government ministry.
Nga had allegedly accused the party of exploiting religion and being deviant.
The PAS wing also previously invited its counterparts in Umno, PKR, and Amanah to join a rally it would be holding this Friday in protest against Nga as well as youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh from DAP.
“This clearly exposes PAS as an ultra-hypocritical and bullying party. Why does their standard vary depending on who is speaking or acting?” Lim said in a statement.
Lim said that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin had also called PAS a “Parti Ajaran Sesat” in the past, but that the Islamic party had not reacted “emotionally” to the remark.
“In fact, many Malay ministers previously attended Christmas celebrations without any issues raised by PAS, let alone accusations of extremism,” he said.
Muhyiddin, when he was deputy prime minister in 2013, had described PAS as a political party promoting deviant teachings when responding to a remark by then PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, that the prayers of Umno members would go unrewarded because their party had rejected Islamic principles.
Lim said if PAS was serious about its stance on Christmas celebrations, it should also make clear if it intended to oppose celebrations for Deepavali, Chinese New Year, as well as the Kaamatan and Gawai festivals in Sabah and Sarawak.
“If so, they should boldly announce this stance before the 16th general election,” he added.
Lim urged PAS leaders to understand and embrace the freedom of religion for non-Muslims enshrined in Articles 3 and 11 of the Federal Constitution, which he said was fundamental to the harmony of Malaysia’s multicultural society.
“Lastly, I call on PAS to play a more inclusive role in uniting Malaysians regardless of race and religion. Focus your energy on advancing the nation’s economic growth, not on sowing division,” he said.
