- Umno Youth secretary Hafiz Ariffin defends his wing chief Dr Akmal Saleh against Pakatan Harapan Youth’s “rude” criticisms.
- Akmal’s concerns about a ham and cheese sandwich’s halal status were deemed vital for Muslim consumers.
An Umno Youth leader has shot back at criticism from Pakatan Harapan against wing chief Dr Akmal Saleh.
Umno Youth secretary Hafiz Ariffin said their counterparts in Harapan have been rather rude recently.
“I stress, Umno Youth leaders respect Harapan Youth’s leadership - however, of late, Harapan Youth leaders have been very rude in making comments.
“Mind your words, we have nothing against you. Our concern is solely with issues and matters that are important to us.
“Continuing to attack Akmal as Umno Youth chief is a signal that encourages conflict (between Harapan) and Umno and BN Youth,” Hafiz (above) said in a Facebook post today.
He was responding to a statement by DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong criticising Akmal for purportedly sensationalising the KK Mart ham and cheese sandwich issue and fanning racial tensions.
Akmal had called it another instance of Islam being belittled.
KK Mart has clarified that the sandwich - produced by a third party - used halal-certified chicken ham, although the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) said the sandwich as a product is not certified to use the halal logo.
Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh speaking on the sandwich issue.
Malaysiakini had learned that the sandwiches were produced by a company owned by a Perak MCA division chief.
Important for Muslim consumers
Commenting on the sandwich issue, Hafiz said while it might appear trivial to some, this is an important issue for Muslims.
“This (Akmal’s criticism) is not an attack on the Malaysian government or any party in the coalition government.
“Maybe some find it trivial, some find it important. But for Muslim consumers, this is paramount. This is the right to voice out,” he said.
Besides Woo, Akmal was also criticised by PKR Youth chief Adam Adli Abd Halim on Dec 29 after the Umno Youth chief questioned Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s pardon in 2018.
