A Hindu priest was charged in the Kuantan sessions court today with sexually assaulting a boy at a temple last year.

The accused, S Shanmugam, 42, was also charged with possessing pornography on his mobile phone, reported Berita Harian.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges, which were read to him before judge Azman Mustapha.

Shanmugam was first charged with non-physical sexual assault by exposing his private parts to a 16-year-old boy at about 11.30pm between Feb 15 and 17 last year.

He was charged under Section 15(a)(i) of the Sexual Offenses Against Children Act 2017, which provides for a prison term of up to 10 years, a RM20,000 fine, or both, upon conviction.

He was also charged with possessing pornography on his mobile phone at about 11.30pm on Feb 15 last year.

The charge was framed under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison term of up to three years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Both offences were allegedly committed inside a room within the temple’s premises.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Anuarul Hakim Abdul Muen, while Shanmugam was represented by lawyer S Kumeraselvam.

Azman set bail at RM8,000 in one surety and imposed an additional condition that the accused must not disturb the victim and witnesses.

He fixed Feb 25 for remention of the case.
