“No colour barrier”: Chinese villagers’ selfless act a showcase of national unity, says MCA Youth

THE recent incident where a group of Chinese villagers in Ladang Bikam, Perak had gone out of their way to facilitate a shortcut through their neighbourhood for travellers returning to Kuala Lumpur is a testament that the country’s national unity remains strong and intact.

MCA Youth information chief Neow Choo Seong said the move was a commendable act that was vital to preserve the country’s long-established national unity.

“Terima kasih and syabas to all who banded together and helped. It was a commendable act and it is vital to preserve our long-established national unity,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (April 16).

“I believe our national unity remains strong and intact. We should foster a stronger sense of unity in diversity that will be the key to racial harmony, well-being of the people, and prosperity of the country.”

Recently, a video posted on Facebook by Zairul Mohd Zain who used a shortcut route in Ladang Bikam to return to Nilai, Negri Sembilan on the fourth day of Syawal had gone viral on social media.

What caught the attention of many social media users was when Zairul said, “They (a group of Chinese men) could choose to sleep, but they preferred to labour in the dark to help ease our journey that night.”

Zairul took to Facebook to express gratitude to the group of men.

“I am very optimistic that Malaysia still has many kind-hearted citizens despite different races, while our unity remains strong,” he wrote.

“From the depths of my heart, if given the chance, I want to meet again with the group of men who helped, and thank them once more, because on that day (the incident), I didn’t have the opportunity to talk much with them.”

Navigating away from the gridlocked highway from Simpang Pulai, Zairul and his wife had turned to Google Maps for a smoother passage, only to find themselves on a seemingly promising detour through village roads.

The route, however, led them to an unexpected dead end – into the darkness of a palm oil plantation, where the road was unpaved and unfit for cars to pass by.

They were approached by local Chinese men with a surprising offer of help after they made a u-turn and reached a residential area.

Zairul, who was stopped by a middle-aged Chinese man, said the man told him that the residents there will help fix the road using a backhoe so that they could pass through.

Zairul was touched by the concerted move, he wrote: “My heart was touched. The people of Perak are impressive. Powerful. This is truly the spirit of Malaysia.”

The couple, which departed from Ipoh at 7.30pm, arrived at their destination in Nilai at 2am. – April 16, 2024
