UMS records most PhD graduates since 2003

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) set its own record for having the most PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) graduates since 2003 in its latest convocation ceremony this week.

Out of the 655 graduates, 97 will get their PhD scrolls, and 558 others will get their postgraduate degrees.

UMS vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor said on Sunday (Dec 10) that this is a momentous achievement for the institution and the graduates.

At the university’s 25th convocation, which is happening until Thursday (Dec 14), 4,236 graduates will receive their scrolls.

He said these graduates comprised those who completed their Public Health Medicine studies, research degrees, Speciality Programme for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Education Diploma and other speciality programmes off campus.

Kasim urged graduates to continue bringing the image of UMS to their next career or education path and always to keep the standard of a UMS graduate high.

Meanwhile, on Monday (Dec 11), Sabah Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin urged graduates to be part of nation-building.

He reminded them to practise good work ethics and use their full potential to contribute to the nation's progress.

"Graduates must be sensitive to current changes, knowledgeable, noble and face challenges with strength and wisdom. With integrity and resilience, graduates can transform Malaysia into a developed, reputable and respected nation," he said.

Juhar said every citizen, regardless of ethnicity, religion and culture, should be involved in the holistic development of this society.

He said Sabah’s melting pot of culture, race and religion exemplifies unity and harmony in Malaysia and should be capitalised as the strength that unites and strengthens Sabahans in all aspects of life.
